Product Details
- The healthcare professionals are largely dependent on Medical Equipment for Diagnosing as well as treatment of an illness. After the treatment the equipment are also used for rehabilitation of the patient. There has been a number of developments related to Medical Devices. The Medical Devices Rules 2017 is in place and all the Medical Equipment will be regulated by Ministry of Health. The Patient Safety framework has been notified and it will now be mandatory to get the calibration and maintenance of the medical devices done as per requirement and maintain the records. It will also be mandatory to get the devices repaired by professionals who have acquired the skills as per the National Operating Standards (NOS) of Health Sector Skill council. Also in place is Materiovigilance Program of India which requires adverse event reporting of Medical Devices to be reported on a voluntary basis which will be made mandatory in due course of time. It was observed that many equipment in hospitals and health centres are either unused or there is no maintenance resulting wastage of resources. To address this, Ministry of Health has issued Comprehensive guidelines along with RFP on Biomedical Equipment Management and Maintenance Program (BMMP) in the month of February 2015. Subsequent to inventory mapping, RFP/tenders are to be rolled out to award maintenance contract. Support in being provided to state governments under NHM. The program aims to ensure maintenance of medical devices in the public health facilities up-to the level of District Hospital, to enable delivery of good quality of diagnosis and therapeutic care. This book is meant to help young engineers who wish to employed or are working as Medical Equipment Technician to calibrate, repair and do the preventive maintenance support to the hospital and to the equipment they are working. The book is divided into four Modules as Module-1-Basics of Healthcare and Medical Devices; MODULE-2-Installation and Maintenance of Medical Devices ; MODULE-3- Calibration, Fault Finding & Repairs of common medical equipment.; Module-4- Training, Assessment, Documentation and Database ManagementThe book covers the requirement for National Operating Standards of Health Sector Skill Council.

Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is the importance of repairing medical devices?
Answer: Repairing medical devices is crucial for ensuring patient safety and the efficacy of treatments. Regular maintenance of clinical equipment prevents malfunctions that could lead to incorrect diagnoses or poor patient outcomes. Facilities that prioritize repair and maintenance protocols often experience enhanced operational efficiency and reduced downtime, which is essential in high-stakes environments like hospitals and clinics. -
Question:
What are the common types of medical devices covered in repair and maintenance?
Answer: Common medical devices that often require repair and maintenance include infusion pumps, ventilators, ECG machines, and imaging equipment. Each device has specific maintenance protocols to ensure they function optimally, which can prevent costly breakdowns and ensure compliance with health regulations. Understanding these common devices aids medical staff in recognizing signs of wear and facilitates timely servicing. -
Question:
How can I identify when a medical device needs maintenance?
Answer: Signs that a medical device requires maintenance may include unusual noises, error messages, or inconsistent performance. Regularly scheduled checks, as well as vigilance from medical staff, can catch these issues early. An example would be scheduling preventive maintenance for equipment like ultrasound machines, which can help prevent more significant issues down the line. -
Question:
What training is required for repairing medical devices?
Answer: Technicians typically require specialized training that covers both the mechanical and electronic systems of medical devices. Programs often include hands-on training, online courses, and certifications focused on biomedical technology. Facilities benefit by employing trained personnel who can quickly address repairs, minimizing risks associated with equipment failure. -
Question:
Can I perform repairs on medical devices myself?
Answer: While some minor maintenance tasks can be performed by trained staff, significant repairs should be conducted by certified technicians. Attempting repairs without proper training and tools can lead to safety issues or further damage to the device. For instance, routine tasks like cleaning and calibrating can be done in-house, but replacing intricate parts should be left to professionals. -
Question:
What are the best practices for maintaining clinical equipment?
Answer: Best practices for maintaining clinical equipment include establishing routine checks, keeping detailed maintenance logs, and ensuring staff are trained on proper usage. Regular calibrations and inspections should coincide with manufacturer guidelines. These practices not only prolong equipment life but also ensure compliance with health care regulations, reducing liabilities. -
Question:
What impact does equipment maintenance have on patient care?
Answer: Proper maintenance of medical equipment directly impacts patient care by ensuring devices are functioning correctly, which is vital for accurate diagnoses and treatments. For example, well-maintained imaging equipment leads to clearer results, enhancing decision-making. Facilities that prioritize equipment care typically see improved patient outcomes and satisfaction levels. -
Question:
How often should medical devices undergo maintenance?
Answer: The frequency of equipment maintenance varies by device but is generally guided by manufacturer recommendations and usage intensity. High-usage devices like anesthesia machines may require monthly check-ups, while others may need semi-annual reviews. Adhering to these schedules can prevent unexpected breakdowns and assist in regulatory compliance. -
Question:
Are there certifications for medical device repair professionals?
Answer: Yes, there are industry-recognized certifications for medical device repair professionals, such as the Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) designation. These certifications validate a technician's expertise and knowledge in maintaining clinical equipment, which enhances trust in device functionality within healthcare environments. -
